I am nominating Jamal Cephus for this award due to his unwavering commitment to being there for his teammates. John Goolsby
Bridge Specialty Group
John is the Regional Operations Leader for Executive Risk. He comes to the office everyday with a positive attitude and a smile on his face. He is a team player through and through, no task is below John, he wants to help out his offices in any way he can. When John gets bad news, he turns it around into something positive and views it as an opportunity to make an impacting change for the teams. One of John’s main areas of focus is how he can keep the teams happy and working as effectively and efficiently as possible. John is the guy who never forgets to celebrate any win. He’s the one who orders pizza for an intern’s last day, or gets donuts to celebrate a teammate returning from a leave of absence. He knows how to make teammates feel good, so they can be their best and stay focused even in hard times. In 2024 John took on 2 major projects, in addition to his other tasks – Small Business Initiative and Shared Service team for Exec Risk. These projects have both seen major obstacles throughout the year and John’s positive outlook paired with his problem solving skills are getting the projects off the ground and running. John stays focused on the culture of his offices and recently he has accepted a new role as PCL of ECC in Oak Brook, IL. While John has graciously offered to continue to assist with operational duties for Executive Risk, he is perfect for this new role and will do an amazing job.

Kelly Dean
Arrowhead Programs PMO
When I read the description of this award, I immediately think of Kelly Dean. Kelly is an amazing friend and teammate and her enthusiasm and passion is infectious. I am CONSTANTLY amazed at all she is able to accomplish – all while maintaining a positive and encouraging attitude. Our work can be challenging and when we face obstacles, it can be easy to get discouraged, but Kelly never shies away from a challenge. Even when things get tough, she rolls up her sleeves, digs in, and helps us all keep our sense of humor as we work through it TOGETHER. Even with all the plates she has spinning, she is always the first to send out a word of encouragement to another teammate or put something FUN into the Teams chat to keep us connected and remind us not to take ourselves too seriously. Since joining the team, she has built an incredible team of project managers who share her diligence and “GSD”-passion and together they keep our many projects running smoothly and have built out an enviable suite of best practice tools and templates. All of this is in addition to the work she does with our Growth & Innovation team building playbooks and shining the spotlight on all the amazing things going on in our organization. She is a cheerleader and a connector in the truest sense of the words, and I am so grateful and inspired every day to work alongside her.

Kira-Lynn Thompson
SRIM
Kira-Lynn has a natural ability to lighten the mood of every room she walks into. She once told me that her mission is to brighten up the day of every person she talks to, and she definitely succeeds. Kira-Lynn will often reach out to others, just to say that she appreciates them for who they are and what they bring to the team. She’s also very engaging with her quick-wit, gifs & memes, and photoshopped portrayals of herself to make others laugh. Since she is so personable, she is great at finding new hires that will fit our culture, and truly cares about fostering their growth within the company. No matter the challenge, she will keep her head up and rally the team to just keep going. I am extremely fortunate to get to work with such a genuine person with a beautiful heart.
Kira is one of those people that you are better for knowing. She has a kind and positive spirit no matter the challenge. She is honest and communicates openly, asking questions that really make you think. She celebrates everyone’s wins, is absolutely an Ambassador of Fun and Kira is GRITTY. She works with each teammate seeing them for their strengths and working with them to learn and grow. Kira has a huge impact on our Culture and truly shines as a Champion of Positivity and Engagement.

Nicole Wolfe
American Specialty
Do you know Nicole? If not, it’s totally your loss. Nicole is bubbly, energetic, focused and always ready to tackle any obstacle in her way. She’s a team leader for our little group of women warriors attempting to dot i’s and cross t’s while getting clients off our lists with a smile on their face. I compare our job with an air traffic controller. Stuff comes in left, right, up and down and as an account coordinator we do our best to get everyone where they need to be, on time and happy. Nicole is the queen of all air traffic controllers. She’s always the first to raise her hand, fix problems and ask the right questions. She’s an amazing mother of two AND she works in time to volunteer regularly all while keeping tabs on all of us and keep up with her own work load. She consistently is the voice for our team and happy to listen and give advice or look into issues that arise.
To wrap up, I’d like to say that at American Specialty we’ve had team members come and others have left as expected with any company. Take a peek at the Account Coordinator team. Nicole is an amazing boss and friend and our little group is happy to stick by her side. No turnover here and I believe that has a lot to do with Nicole.

Beverly Eckman
Arrowhead Programs – Business Analyst Team
A few years ago, we were given the privilege to create a new role to help ensure a consistent onboarding experience for our new teammates and further build out our training offerings. Bev joined the team and immediately started making an impact. Filling the shoes of a brand-new role with limited experience in the industry is a tough challenge, but she dove right in, and our new teammates consistently rave about how welcomed and supported she ensures they feel when they join the team. Bev is a fantastic partner and consistently looks for ways to help make our trainings more effective, robust, and consistent – helping our teammates to really shine in their roles. When we discover a new opportunity to improve the way we work – no matter how sticky it is, Bev is the first person I call to begin workshopping potential solutions because she will take the ball, run with it, and help us find ways to improve. I am so thankful to have Bev as part of our team!

Christie is the backbone of our filing efforts for two of our Protector Plans’ proprietary product filings. She is responsive, organized, engages stakeholders only when necessary, and takes the work off of our business leaders’ plates so they can focus on production and not filings. She works closely with our IT partners and Underwriting Operations team to make sure each has the tools and information necessary to carry the approved product into the next phase of development. She does all of it with a great attitude and an eye towards problems solving. She also has excellent working relationships with our carrier partners and has earned their trust and confidence.
Nominated by Hilary Zimmer
Edwin Soto
Wright Flood
Edwin, a CTR is behind the scenes on so many things within our CTR realm! For example, Edwin was appointed to assist with our new system “Win”. Whenever there were any issues he always encouraged us to let him know, no matter how many times something occurred, so he could send it to the technical team to get it fixed. He is still our go to person when we have issues.
At one time I had to help cover what he does when he was away. We recorded calls as he patiently walked me through the steps. What I found out is when claims are stuck or if there are duplicates or any technical hold up, he is the one that will fix the issue so that everything runs smoothly. That is extremely important when we get a lot of claims during a storm/flood event and the insureds need our immediate help.
Lastly, I ran into something that was more complicated that I never did before. I went to Edwin and with his vast experience he didn’t shy away from helping me. He coud have just given me the barest of help, but he didn’t. He helped me to completely solve the issue, which took approximately a week.
He is a “smoothie machine” when it comes to things running smoothly with claims.
Nominated by Melanie Grenet
Janet Jim
Arrowhead IS
Janet has become an indispensable part of the property team. She is committed to details, and incredibly proactive at digging deep into the data to make our department, AEX, and reports run smoothly. She is always logged in early, and stays late to get the work done. Most recently, she’s been integral with getting our new carrier DB Insurance up on AEX. There was a lot of trouble with DEX and permissions that she helped. She has also been playing a major role in the AEX Refresh project making sure the reports, data, and policy information is all working as expected. She’s incredibly smart, but makes difficult issues easy to understand. I am 100% confident when Janet is on the project, it will be a success. It’s for all the little things she does (mostly behind the scenes, and at the drop of a hat) that I nominate her for unsung hero.

Stacy McCall
Orchid
Stacy exemplifies the qualities of a true unsung hero. During the implementation of Orchid’s new system platform, Stacy quickly became a subject-matter expert on system processes and business workflows. Her willingness to share her knowledge and assist others was instrumental in testing and validating the system during user acceptance testing. Her background in service operations provided a unique end-user perspective when looking at the use of the system, seeing the big picture, and testing from that point of view vs. purely testing by function. Her ability to understand how end users perceive the system has improved the quality of what is getting implemented in the systems today. Stacy has become the “go to” business SME for all system user testing. Stacy works tirelessly behind the scenes to get questions answered to keep development and testing teams moving forward. The coordination of testing requires a lot of organization and is often a thankless job! It is with great respect that I nominate Stacy for the Unsung Hero Award. Her quiet, yet impactful contributions have made a significant difference in streamlining the UAT process!

His enthusiastic willingness to not only help find but create solutions to improve efficiency and user experience for his customers is second to none. The Protector Plans Data & Analytics team has come a long way. PowerBI Dashboards, Financial KPI’s, Broker Scorecards, and Rate and Retention reports are only a few of the many current state deliverables that were only hopes and dreams just 2 years ago. All of this would not be possible without Zach’s tireless efforts to standardize data across Protector Plans, by gathering data from many different sources, and digging into data quality issues and discrepancies. Aside from his day-to-day responsibilities, Zach has gone above and beyond on numerous occasions to assist in big projects and fire drills that required immediate attention. To name a few, he has been the key player in reconciling our teams Financials to our Carriers Financials, which has gained visibility across the Leadership teams. He also utilized his Actuarial skills from early in his career by spending countless hours digging into Coverages and Rating factors to help create internal Rate Monitors for the Dental and Lawyers teams. He constantly tries to find ways to automate inefficient and manual processes to help the Underwriters focus on writing more business. Zach is an amazing teammate who constantly exceeds expectations and is willing to help in any way possible to get the job done, a true unsung hero.

Guillermo Garcia
Arrowhead Programs – Business Analyst Team
Guillermo’s support team efficiently manages and resolves customer support tickets. He has analyzed service levels and identified effective strategies to enhance our response times. By leveraging the JIRA ticketing system, Guillermo implemented automations that use code words to assign issues to the appropriate analysts based on their profit center alignment. This created a faster turnaround since the analyst would see the ticket sooner. Beyond technology, Guillermo collaborated with his team to ensure effective escalation automations and timely follow-ups, resulting in faster responses and increased customer satisfaction.
Guillermo and his team reviewed additional JIRA automations to build templates that enhance quality and streamline processes. There were many change requests that lacked enough information or thorough review and would often result in rework. Using JIRA automation, Guillermo and his team developed new templates that targeted the detailed descriptions presented in rates, forms, and change JIRAs. These templates include effective user stories and acceptance criteria using the Gherkin method (Given-When-Then) to capture user goals and the rationale behind changes. The templates also prompt business analysts to consider various scenarios, present appropriate requirements, and develop diverse testing strategies. These new requests have significantly improved and will continue to enhance the quality of change management for the team.
Guillermo has explored automation tools like Power Automate. Through LinkedIn Learning courses, he taught himself to automate tasks such as reviewing email inboxes, extracting files, and notifying team members of pending work. He utilizes automation to follow up on tasks and send reminders for recurring tasks, reducing the need for manual oversight. Guillermo continuously reviews technology to improve business processes.
I am grateful for Guillermo’s dedication to the quality of the work product being created as well as the continuous review for high standards with the team.

Jill Horine
Arrowhead IS
Jill has been a member of Arrowhead Information Systems’ Database Development team for at least as long as I have been here, and then some 🙂 During that time she has stepped up to become a manager and has become a fantastic mentor for her team. She has helped members of her team, for example, develop the communication skills to match their technical skills so they can better explain solutions to their customers; and to develop their technical skills so they build self-confidence and can make progress on the path to being the best they can be. She possesses highly developed skills in these areas herself and shares her experiences candidly and freely to help us all avoid past mistakes and do things better. For example, she identified a potential issue with duplicate data very early on in a project I am currently managing – this allowed us to address the problem early, otherwise we could have gone for months without realizing the problem which would potentially have resulted in a lot of rework and project delays. I always feel more confident when she is on my project team and I believe she embodies many of the principles of radical candor – being honest from a place of care and love to help those around her be the best they can be.

Kumau McWilliams
Clear Risk
I started here back in 2020. I came in with some background knowledge in insurance, but claims was a new area for me, the operating system was new, and I was often overwhelmed by what I didn’t know and to top things off we were remote due to Covid. Kumau was quite busy with his own claims load, but I never would have known that based on how he treated me. He was patient with me, never made me feel like I was a burden and continued answering my calls when it seemed the knowledge needed was never-ending. He would randomly reach out to me through Teams to see how things were going and see if I needed assistance or if I was feeling overwhelmed. These days, I don’t have nearly as many questions and things are coming a bit easier. I can say that without a doubt my experience coming into this role would’ve been so much more stressful, my knowledge wouldn’t be what it is today and that I am a better asset to this team because Kumau was willing to go above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable in my role. His choice to go beyond to be a leader and mentor when he was not required, was everything in those early days and I am so thankful for his continued support.

Sarah Norfield
SRIM
Sarah is a mentor that has always put her people first. She leads in a way that lets teammates learn, make a mistake and grow from it. She is knowledgeable and honest if she doesn’t know the answer, but will always help to get the answer. Sarah has always been future focused and this has helped to prepare myself and others to take on the roles we have and want to pursue. By sharing the “why” behind decisions, pulling the curtain back and having those harder conversations, addressing topics with openness, care and a solutions focused approach we have all grown into the leaders we are because of the leader Sarah is. She champions our culture, celebrating teammates and inspiring others.
I am excited to nominate Sarah Norfield for this award. She never overwhelmed me with too frequent check-ins and detailed oversight. She has a more hands-off approach, which allowed me to work independently, fostering me to become a confident member of the team. She is knowledgeable, approachable, and patient, always willing to help me learn. She shares valuable experiences, listens actively, and empowers me to find solutions.

Tamara Martin

Tamara embodies the essence of a true mentor, consistently demonstrating an unwavering commitment to our team’s growth and success. Her approachability and knowledge make her the go-to person for both professional guidance and personal support.
Tamara’s dedication to mentorship is evident in her availability and genuine care. She has played a pivotal role in my personal development, imparting lessons that go beyond the workplace. Her ability to share experiences, including those that teach us what not to do, are invaluable. As a mentor, Tamara listens intently, provides solutions, and more importantly, coaches us in solution-finding techniques that foster our commitment to excellence.
What I find most impactful is Tamara’s transparency in sharing the ‘why’ behind decisions. This insight not only deepens our understanding of the business decisions but also enables the team to take the ownership for seeking out the why. Her mentorship is a gift that keeps on giving, as it empowers her team to grow, learn, and lead.
On a personal note, Tamara has been a pillar in my career. Her encouragement and wisdom have helped me navigate challenges and celebrate successes. I am truly grateful for her unwavering support and the confidence she instills in all of us.

Terry Pritchard
Wright Flood
Terry is awesome! He is willing to explain whatever you need no matter what your level. For example, I had to discern information from an engineering report. I was unsure of some of the verbiage and how it related to policy coverage and the claim. I like how he will ask me questions to help me get to the answers with the knowledge that I have; then when I am stuck, he will teach me what I don’t know. That is what he did in that situation.
He is patient and appreciates when he is asked questions. He makes you feel comfortable when talking with you and always encourages learning. He will help everyone and anyone whenever he is available. He will always speak directly to insureds when I don’t have an answer and it is more complicated. He has so much knowledge to share. Last week he sent me a copy of a handout he had on the basics of building buildings because he thought I might find it handy, which I very much did!
He is a great mentor and deserves this award.

She continuously maintains her 500 plus claims, trains and does ongoing mentoring to the new people for just about every class that hits the floor, she consistently works on tasks that are behind for others in the department in order to reduce escalation and maintain SLA’s. She volunteered to work on my claims while I was unexpectedly out of the office. When I returned to work, I was stunned to be within the SLA time frame. She reached out to homeowners for missing documents, dealt with some very challenging homeowners and still maintained her own claim load. Very impressive not to mention to come to work with such a positive ‘Get it done’ attitude. Great job Ashley!

Garrett Macgowan
Arrowhead Programs – Business Analyst Team
Garrett exemplifies the qualities of a GSD team member. His approach to consistently reviewing and improving processes demonstrates a commitment to excellence and a deep understanding of the complexities involved in the business. An example of pushing through difficult work products is that Garrett can review and understand the Commercial Insurance Statistical Stat Plan and analyze it for a premium data feed that we submit on behalf of one the programs we support. This is not an easy document to comprehend, but Garrett made it his job to learn so that he could problem solve for complex problems. Otherwise, as his leader, I would be resolving the issues for the life of the product.
When faced with errors, Garrett’s methodical problem-solving is noteworthy. He not only identifies the root cause but also proactively seeks ways to prevent future occurrences. His initiative to learn Python and apply it to reverse a transaction record is a testament to his willingness to go the extra mile and leverage technology to enhance efficiency.
Garrett’s collaborative spirit is equally impressive. He does not shy away from challenges; instead, he engages with his team to dissect problems and brainstorm solutions. Moreover, Garrett’s positive disposition and welcoming nature makes him a sought-after colleague. His drive to complete tasks not only benefits the projects at hand but also inspires others to emulate his work ethic. The gratitude expressed for his presence on the team and the anticipation of future collaborations underscore the significant impact he has made. Gisela Gilbert
Proctor Loan Protector
Gisela goes above and beyond for the reps who have to call EMS to get payments, assistance, guidance or to take an extremely angry caller who wants to escalate their situation. Every time I have called, and she answers, I instantly felt better. I know at that moment, my question will be answered. I know I wont be given a hard time, or if its a silly question I should have known, I know she will give the correct, honest answer and not make me feel bad for asking. She cares about the reps and wants them to excel as well as go back to the call they are on, knowing the full explanation, with confidence. She makes it to where another call to EMS is not needed because she resolves the issue the FIRST time.

Jenna Oddo
Protector Plans
Jenna is a great asset to the Protector Plans team. She takes on new responsibilities head on and follows through to create solutions. Jenna has been a key part of the integration of 2 new acquisitions and most recently led a new system implementation with the new teammates, spending countless hours training the team and answering questions. In addition, Jenna took on the mail process reporting in to her. She rolled up her sleeves and learned the process herself, proving that a job previously handled by 2 FTEs could be handled by 1/2 of an FTE. She improved the process and made it more efficient and also implemented solutions to save money within the process. This was all done while maintaining her own book of business, where she directly services accounts and works with insureds. Jenna always maintains a positive attitude and has a smile on her face. She is respected and liked by everyone on the team. Jenna volunteers for new opportunities and takes new challenges head on. After joining Protector Plans as an intern 12 years ago, Jenna has touched so many aspects of the business and grown her knowledge base considerably. Jennifer Weible
Wright Public Entity
Jenn is an all-star for our team. She is the Director of Underwriting for a $45M workers’ comp program. Jenn took over a department for a longtime teammate and has updated our systems, improved our data and generally over-hauled the entire UW department. She faces challenges and deadlines and is always on top of all tasks and teammates. She is happy to step in and assist the marketing/sales team when we need assistance. Deadlines are never missed, work product is exceptional and accurate and she is a joy to interact with as a person. Never one to get down and frustrated, she rises above it all to get the job done. Even with a young family, if work needs to be done, she is always available to make sure our program succeeds. Small example.. .we had to issue a revised quote after hours with a quote presentation first thing the next morning… Jenn was up to the task even though it wasn’t during regular work hours. We retained the account because of her extra effort!

Joel Casillas
Arrowhead IS
I have worked with Joel on a couple different projects now. He has always been very approachable and extremely helpful whenever I bring questions or concerns to him. He is often able to point out potential roadblocks we may face when working on a project, and always manages to find a solution.
For example, on a current project we are both working on, we needed a rater to be able to develop and test the system and make sure the premiums were being calculated correctly. This rater would also be used in automation cases that run nightly. Unfortunately, the rater we were provided was outdated and not very user friendly. Joel took it upon himself to create a brand new rater for the Web Development and Quality Assurance teams to use. This is not normally something the web developers are expected to do, but he did it anyways, which was an immense help when it came to QAT and automation. Joel’s work ethic and ability to deliver is what makes him stand out!

Robert Nagby
Arrowhead Aftermarket
Robert serves as the Operations Manager for two of my programs – Accelerate and OEM Rental. In this role, Robert continuously surpasses the expectations of the entire team. Robert goes above expectations in writing JIRA details with screenshots, mockups, and even solutions for the CBS team to utilize. When our carrier asked us to install a better follow up system, Robert built us one without being assigned to it. On his own volition, he has built the submission log and follow up system now implemented across my team. When Robert hears of an issue or problem, he takes ownership and looks to provide solutions. He has taken numerous I.T. and programming classes on his own time just to learn how to fix issues we were facing. Finally, no matter how many projects or assignments he is tasked with; Robert will immediately step in and help a teammate in need. The impact Robert has had in this role has allowed us to better leverage other project resources. He has brought solutions to problems that we might not have reached without him. Robert approaches every situation with a winning attitude and a “roll-up-our-sleeves-and-handle-it” mentality.

Laurencio Leyva
Arrowhead Personal Property
Laurencio has an incredible aptitude for detail. This year the personal property division has been tasked with rolling out two programs. A new Homeowner’s carrier: DB Insurance, and a new surplus lines program with a new carrier: HDI Global SE. Laurencio’s main focus this year has been to develop incredibly detailed business requirement documents for our IS and Astec teams. Laurencio’s specific directions, and years of system knowledge allow him to problem solve ahead of issues. He’s also creative with new ideas to accomplish our goals, for instance outlining how entirely new screens, or third party call outs on AEX should look and perform. He’s always thinking ahead of how rate calls and effective date confirmations may have to move due to new program requirements. The outlines he has completed are truly the main reason why our team can be so efficient at rolling out new programs. He’s also always thinking about the customer experience, and how to make things easier for our underwriters. With all this in mind, I am happy to nominate Laurencio for Operational Excellence Superstar!!

Nicole Wolfe
American Specialty
Nicole is more than a Team Lead, she is what I refer to as the “Mother Hen” of the team. She supports all Account Coordinators – both young and older teammates – remote or WFH, if there are health issues with the actual employee or an employees child or family member. She is both understanding and sympathetic. Nicole stands up for us as a team, she knows right when to jump in when we are struggling without a teammate even saying a word. Nicole is sharp, with the best memory I have ever known. She is quick to ask our opinions and suggestions on what to do with making our team more time efficient, as well as to lessen the load of the Coordinators. If a Coordinator is off on PTO and the back up Coordinator for that person is bogged down – Nicole always offers to cover, even when she herself if more than bogged down.
Since starting at AS about 7 years ago, I am amazed at how many efficiencies have been set in motion for our role, either enacted by Nicole or brought to Nicole via questions or suggestions so she could move with it to make it happen. This in turn makes us able to do more in depth work with our accounts in our assigned territories, provide more support to our BDLs and other internal departments and most importantly, our insureds and agents. Nicole deserves this and so much more.

The BSIB operations team has been focused on standardizing processes across our Casualty and Property lines in 2024. Sheri was instrumental in creating our revised BSIB Procedure Manual (the first one in over 10 years) and rolled it out to our teammates. This procedure manual was provided to our IO Audit teams who conducted audits in our casualty and property offices earlier this year. In our wrap up calls, they stated the manual was a great resource for them to see how we are ensuring compliance across the organization. All our casualty and property offices passed their audits and received feedback that it is evident we are focused on compliance and ensuring our teammates get the training they need to comply. Sheri has spent countless hours training teammates who need assistance with our revised standard processes. Our teammates appreciate how approachable she is and that she genuinely cares about their success. Sheri is the epitome of an Operational Exellence Superstar, and we are grateful to have her.
